Song for You © Jon Davis 2018
He came out of the audience just as I walked off stage
And asked “Who wrote that second song you played?”
“It’s mine” I said, “I played it for the first time today”
Then he said, “You wrote that song about me”
Just a song about a girl who ran off with another man
By a solo singer / song-writer with a guitar in his hand
But the man from the crowd; well, he seemed to understand
And I realised I had something to say
CHORUS
Sometimes the only way to deal with what’s inside
Is to write down all my feelings and swallow all my pride
Then I put it all to music, where I have no place to hide
I write my songs for me ... but I sing them for you
One day I sang a tale of fallen heroes left behind
While in the crowd I saw a group of veterans start to cry
Although they did survive, some parts of them had died
It tormented them that they were still alive
CHORUS
Sometimes the only way to deal with what’s inside
Is to write down all my feelings and swallow all my pride
Then I put it all to music, where I have no place to hide
I write my songs for me ... but I sing them for you
(BRIDGE)
But as I sit backstage with just a bottle of JD
I wonder if my audience knows how lonely it can be
When they ask the questions I have the answers that they need
But would anyone ever sing a song for me?
I sang my song of love about a girl from a country town,
As a cowboy approached a lady and ‘laid his guns down’
They danced for a few numbers and as he took her home
I knew I’d introduced them somehow
CHORUS
Sometimes the only way to deal with what’s inside
Is to write down all my feelings and swallow all my pride
Then I put it all to music, where I have no place to hide
I write my songs for me ... but I sing them for you
I write my songs for me ... but I sing them just for you
