Lest We Forget © Jon Davis 2015
Australia was 14 years old when she called her sons to war
Filled with youth, pride and excitement,
They didn’t know what they were fighting for
They joined forces with New Zealand and forged a new identity
They became known as ANZACs at a place called Gallipoli
They weren’t prepared for bullets, bombs or freezing cold at night
No one told them grown men cry or lay trembling in fright
They were armed with just a 303 and simple bayonette
So in memory of our diggers, we say “Lest We Forget”
Chorus
This story must be told
Of brave women and men
May this message be our warning
As we remember them
War broke out in 39 with Australia now a target
On 19 February 1942 they bombed the town of Darwin
Since then Australians many times have entered the fray
And we commemorate that spirit every ANZAC day
Chorus
This story must be told
Of brave women and men
May this message be our warning
As we remember them
(Spoken)
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them
In times of need when the world calls Australia will be there
Taking forth the ANZAC spirit where only the bravest dare
While at home we live in freedom, forever in their debt
We honour all our fallen; “Lest We Forget”
Call & Response
Their story must be told
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
It must never happen again
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
This lesson is our warning
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them
We will remember them
“Lest We Forget”
